When you’re a student, you’re often competing with other students in your year, classes and even in your city. Of course, there’s plenty of competition when it comes to academic achievements, but what about the competition of where you’ll be living next year? This might not be something that you’ve started thinking about yet, but the weeks and months will flash by quicker than you know, so it’s wise to be prepared.
So while you’re enjoying your term at university, when is a good time to start looking for next year’s student house?
Preparing to Look
Before you start looking for a specific house, you can make other preparations and start making plans for where you’ll be living next year. It’s a good idea to start this as early as possible so that you’re well prepared for finding your new home.
You’ll need to think about:
- Who you will live with
- The area you want to live in
- What type of accommodation you want to live in
- Any amenities you want to have
- Your budget
If you’re able to decide on some of these things early, you may find it easier when it comes to looking for your new student home.
How Early Should You Start Looking?
There isn’t really a specific time when you should start looking for your new student home, but it’s advisable to start early. The best houses get snapped up early, so if you want to find a great house for a good price, you’ll need to get ahead of all the other students looking for the same thing.
We spoke to Mighty Student Living, student accommodation providers in Lancaster who said:
“How early you need to start looking will depend on where you are based. In Lancaster, for example, we recommend students start looking around November-December as this is when a lot of the local students start their search. As we start the New Year and beyond, there will be far less choice and students might not be able to find a property that matches their criteria”.
What If I’ve Started Looking Late?
When you’re a student, you have a lot to think about, so we understand that you may find yourself with less time than you were hoping for when looking for next year’s home. If this is the case, it’s not ideal, but it’s not a disaster! Most student cities have plenty of houses and accommodation to choose from, but you may need to make some compromises.
If you’ve started looking for your new home a little late, you may find that you will need to consider other areas or going a little further out of town than you were hoping. However, you should be able to find somewhere to live. If you are worried, you can get in touch with your university’s housing service and they should be able to give you some helpful advice and point you in the right direction.
Ideally, you should start looking for your new student home early so you can get everything you were hoping for. Don’t leave things until the summer term to start thinking about where you’ll live next year! If you can make a start before Christmas, you’ll know that you have a little bit of a head start and should be able to find the perfect student house.
